Your Apps are Watching You →
An examination of 101 popular smartphone “apps”—games and other software applications for iPhone and Android phones—showed that 56 transmitted the phone’s unique device ID to other companies without users’ awareness or consent. Forty-seven apps transmitted the phone’s location in some way. Five sent age, gender and other personal details to outsiders.

Thank you Patton Oswalt. Thank you.
—That was well-written, but it read a lot like the rant of an indie music nerd who just found out his favorite underground band signed to a major. Not sure what the point was. The whole purpose of pop culture is to drive consumerism. If you want to service your “thought-palace” you could, I dunno, read a book with no pictures or something.
For some reason the Clone High guys have been tapped to do a 21 Jump Street movie…
Not sure what to think about that one.

NYT Bike Lane Debate →
“Promote biking on regular streets, and thus avoid “ghettoizing” cyclists into bike lanes. One problem now is that the bike lanes are usually put on larger streets and avenues, which means that cyclists are mixing with higher speed traffic and higher volumes of traffic. One solution is to make clear that bikes are appropriate on most city streets, even those without bike lanes.”

TRUCKEE, Calif. — When Mimi Ash arrived at her mountain chalet here for a weekend ski trip, she discovered that someone had broken into the home and changed the locks.
When she finally got into the house, it was empty. All of her possessions were gone: furniture, her son’s ski medals, winter clothes and family photos. Also missing was a wooden box, its top inscribed with...

A Typical Day for PFC Bradley Manning →
PFC Manning is held in his cell for approximately 23 hours a day. The guards are required to check on PFC Manning every five minutes by asking him if he is okay. PFC Manning is required to respond in some affirmative manner. At night, if the guards cannot see PFC Manning clearly, because he has a blanket over his head or is curled up towards the wall, they will wake him in order to ensure he...

The Pee Test →
Honestly I wanted to back out, but I didn’t want to put her out. And also — her name may have been Lilly, and she may have gotten happy about eating turkey sandwiches and stuff, but she was still an EX-CON. Who KNEW what she was capable of? Then it hit me: I was her pee bitch.
Don't Trust Your Neighbors →
Holder’s beating the “domestic terrorism” drum. Sigh. It was a full two years ago that Fox first started scare mongering about White Al Qaeda. The message now is, “When you get to the airport to go home for the holidays, don’t complain about us looking at your privates.”
This is the story of the sea squirt: It hatches with a rudimentary spinal cord...

Yogi Bear is not a kids’ movie. It is a bleak futurist parable about humanity’s inability to accept a non-human sapience. It is also about a bear who wears a hat.
